AHearing is the act or process of perceiving sound, of listening or
receiving information. (World dictionary pg 977).
Generally hearing is a nature ability of receive a sound wave,
because listening is an interactional attempts of sound wave or message.
Hearing impairment may deaf or has partial hearing. A child is
considering deaf, even if not completely so, if he or she cannot hear normal
everyday convention. Deaf people can hear loud noises. Although they sound
distorted and indistinct.
Hearing impairment was categorized
into two types such as:-
Congenitally, these are people who are born deaf. It was not caused
by external factors such as noise caused by heavy machine found in industries
but this it appear naturally when a child born. So it is difficult for a child
who is born deaf to develop speak or an understanding of spoken language.
Adventitiously, these are people who are born with normal hearing.
In this situation a child is born with no such problem of hearing but this can
happen when he or she faced with different problems such as an accident or illness
become deaf.
The personal or learners who have hearing problem can be identified
in the following ways such as:-
If in the students who turn ear toward a speaker, if students
frequently ask to have something repeated, if students do not follow direction
and if students frequently complain of earaches called allegers. So this can be
the indication to determine the students with hearing problems.
The following are some of ways or steps to be used by a teacher to
help students with hearing problems:-
Make sure your students preferential sitting with a direct views of
your face and mouth, simply because it could be easier for them to read facial
expression of the teachers. So to a teacher must maintain eye contact to the
learners this could make a teacher to help those students with hearing problem
Don’t speak while you write on the chalkboard the children need to
see your face and not your back simply because this student learns through
observation of facial expression. Example lips of the teachers. So that a
teacher must follow the rules of using chalkboard when you’re in classroom so
as to help learners with such problem.
Ensure there is good writing to reinforce clear sight of visual aid
for the aim of helping students to perceive message clearly by observe writings
without obstacles to the learners mental. That’s why learners can well afford
to receive message of the teacher views (concepts) concerning about subject
matter by using any device like projector or chalk board.
Use lots of pictures, graphic materials, by using these could help
children to learn and understand the subject matter due to fact that, these
students are visual learners. Therefore a teacher need to have these aids so as
to ensure lesson are performing well because without having these aids could
lead these learners to fail to understand the content provided by a teacher.
Repetition as well as hands activities (use of non verbal signs.)
This repetition and hands activities may consolidate what have Teacher taught
to the students or to their learners. Examples hands activities could clarify
where there is difficult to the impaired students to understand.
Teachers should frequent check to see that the listening devices
are working properly, for those students who use device for hearing success
frequency moderator (FM). So duties of Teachers is to make sure that he or her microphone switch on even frequency moderator are working properly to the
students so as student can receive what teacher taught .
Always talk and ask your students questions even though he or she
has problem, make them hearing what you said, this is the way to encourage your
learners to speak for the case to make higher capacity of understanding the lesson as a result of
formulating a well performing as well as a well rounded students.
Let students interact each other, not take role of interpreter on his or her behalf , give them
to feel free in discussion with others
when you teach the lesson in the classroom.Dont be harsh when they conduct
several discussion within the lesson
because this can help them to became a well students and
promoting high knowledge of understanding .
Generally the approach of helping students with hearing impairment to learn, fall into oral approach and manual approach. Oral
approaches include a teacher using lip reading and speech reading while manual
approaches including sign language or figure spelling. If well assisted a
